The objective of compact fluorescent light bulb (CFLs) distribution projects is to save energy in developing countries by replacing incandescent light bulbs with high quality, long life CFLs. One CFL can save up to 80 percent of the energy and has an expected life many times of that of an incandescent light bulb. Since power generation in developing countries is often based on the burning of fossil fuels, and also often moreover using inefficient methods of generation or not up-to-date plants, the projects result in a massive reduction of the greenhouse gas CO2.
